Character Creation

Server Rules & Guides

Tip for combatting option paralysis!

At every step, there are a LOT of options.  One way to help narrow them down is to add anything you THINK you might want, and then trim it down later.  Don't be afraid to add more than you need so that you can see everything that you're considering in one place.  Overspend at first, then trim it down.  This will also be useful later when you're trying to decide how you want to advance your character.

If there is anything you like the flavor of, but can't afford the points for it, or don't like all the mechanical effects of it, you can take it as a Quirk instead.

These Categories might also help you narrow down to what you're looking for.

Welcome to Character Creation! I'm gonna put it to you straight... Character creation is the hardest and most complicated part of GURPS, but we're here to help! If you have any questions at any point, feel free to hit up the #character-creation channel. All of the actual RPing and gameplay with us should be easily doable from mobile devices, but we recommend creating your character from a computer. It's possible on a phone, but might be a pain.

About your Character

  • GURPS uses a point-buy system for everything.  When your character is finished, your total point value should be 100.
  • You can also take up to 50 points of disadvantages, which are worth negative points (more on those later).
  • Your character must have actual AND apparent age 18+.  We recommend being no older than 26.
  • Your first character must use one of our playable races.
  • Your character can be a Buddy or a Hero.  You don't have to decide right now. More information.

The sections below will walk you through the process, but feel free to ask for help at any point!

Step 3: Choosing Equipment

Your character can begin with any mundane possessions they desire, if it makes sense for their Wealth score and character background (listed here as Adventuring Gear). This includes weaponry appropriate to the weapon skills you have chosen (see; Buying Weapons and Armor). To select your gear, follow these links: WeaponsArmor and Shields.

Starting characters can't afford anything too fancy. Don't worry, the people of Luachmar are relatively welcoming, and you're likely to find a place to stay if you act cordially and pull your own weight. You won't have to fear for starvation; even the most impoverished on the island subsist well enough on foraged foods. It's up to you to describe how your character gets by.

Advanced equipment, like enchanted or high-quality weapons and armor, are available but scarce. Those that keep them often guard them jealously, or such items are bespoke by fine craftsmen; it will take significant effort, or an amount of luck, to run across one. However, Luachmar's isolation makes it an ideal hideout for fences, who sometimes carry incredibly valuable gear.
