Welcome to the Vigilants. You are one of the thousands of people living in the imperial capital of Sentra, the jewel of the Empire

For some of you, this is home—a comfortable and familiar place you've known your entire life.  For others, the city may only be a brief stop, perhaps one of many in your travels.  But regardless of how you came here, you share the same streets.

Depending on who you are—and where you live—Sentra can be a beautiful city of wonder and splendor. Yet that perfect city is only what many people see on the surface.  There are those that understand there is more to the city, that there are flaws in it that run deeper than what most will see.  There are those that know what lies beneath.

The Story

Niman was a student studying theoretical thaumaturgy at Pallida University. Originally from Seidland, he was granted a scholarship granted by one of the foundations of House Fournius. He has no family in the city.

He died from an acute case of Arcstone poisoning, which should not have been possible given his circumstances. An autopsy revealed that his internal anatomy was mirrored.

Renatus is home to the School of Arcane Theory and Application at Pallida University.

Faculty offices, study rooms, and collaboration spaces are on the third floor. The second and first floor are classrooms, with one larger auditorium-style lecture hall on the first floor. The basement houses the workshops and laboratories. There is a service/freight levitator connecting the floors, as well as a staircase near the center of the building.

The Singers were mentioned by Mordenkai, who called himself a former Listener of theirs. He says that they would speak to him, a chorus of voices, and tell him what to do. They extended his lifespan, and may have given him other supernatural powers as well. He does not remember the things that he was asked to do, but seemed to grow fearful.

The latest Listener is unknown, but Mordenkai believed that they are currently in the city of Sentra. Cephius er'Ceasian may have been that Listener.

The Singers match dark tales of elvish bogeymen called ustasi duyarti (which roughly translates to "puppet master"). They sang to their victims to force them to do things against their will.

The City

Read about life in the city and the neighborhoods and people that live in them:  City Life

Random Spotlights

The neighborhood is built around Pallida University, dedicated to the pursuit of learning (while perhaps making some profit as well).  There are about 120 students attending the University, half of which are learning the arcane arts.  Other students pursue studies in history, languages, mathematics, and philosophy.

Although there is the large central campus, there are many other buildings throughout the neighborhood that are owned by the University.

Places of Interest

Auriel Concert Hall hosts the finest musical performances in the city.

Ivorium Tower is the home of the Arcana Department, where students come eager to learn magical skills.

The Museum of Antiquities is part of the university, but not part of the main campus. It has a collection of artifacts from across Aleona, although there is a tendency of items to be sold as much as put on display. There are numerous rumors of vast rooms below the publicly accessible areas of the museum that contain unopened crates of treasures waiting to be cataloged, shelves of artifacts deemed uninteresting, and a few secret rooms holding items too important or dangerous to put on public display.

Meriel has traveled from town to town as a street magician, performing card tricks and minor feats of illusion—not with actual magic, but with sleight of hand and misdirection. She was working as a performer for the Gilded Stage until Ragor got her a job as an agent of the Vigilants.

She now works with Constable Amos Crow solving crimes around the city. She seems to have caught the attention of an ancient group known as the Singers.

True wizards, sorcerers, and artificers are rare and remarkable. They can perform feats of magic beyond the talents of the most gifted Magewrights.  The founders of the Assembly believed that magical knowledge should always be used in the service of the law.

The first wizards circle of the Sentran Empire, it helped early emperors spread the rule of law across the continent, fought against Orc mages, and pushed back against the Dwarven threat during the The Calamity. As a result, the Assembly is very human-centric. Much of the zeal has gone out of the Assembly in the last few centuries. Most members still abide by the traditions of the Assembly, but many are more interested in the acquisition of gold or power than the preservation of society, and the wizards of the Order demanded a fortune in exchange for protection against the dwarves.

Despite the tarnishing of the Order, the wizards and sorcerers still respect the traditions of the past. One of the most important traditions is the requirement that the wizard know the precise purpose of every spell that he casts, to ensure that his actions do not spread chaos and discord across the world.  They look down their noses at the Guild of Esoteric Starlight and their disinterest in order.

It is believed amongst the Orcs that one of the reasons the Assembly battled against them was to steal their arcane secrets, many of which are lost now.
