Making an Adventure

Welcome, prospective Guide, to Tales from Everwhere. This guide will walk you through the steps of preparing and running an adventure in Everwhere.

Setup

If you don't have it yet, ask an Admin to give you the Guide role, then make a Quest. The following steps will all take place in the Attributes tab, in order to create a poster for your adventure. Note that you must have played in at least one adventure in Tales from Everwhere in order to be a Guide!

General Info

Fill in some basic info:

  • The adventure's name
  • Your name or alias
  • Your contact details (preferably Discord and/or email)
  • The game's date or schedule - be sure to include your timezone, since we have players from all around the world!

Game Info

Once that's done, decide which world the adventures takes place in. Is it an official, published setting, is it a homebrew setting of your making, or is it a setting from a book or show? Fill that in on the Adventure Sheet. If the setting doesn't exist yet within the Tales from Everwhere Kanka campaign, create a Location to represent it, and give it the type "Setting".

Next, choose which system you want to use to run your adventure, and write it on the Adventure Poster. If your system isn't listed in the System Catalogue, and its rule set is freely available online, add it to the list along with a link to the system's rules. If the system can't be found online, see Adding a new System.

Write down how many players you're looking for, as well as how many sessions you plan your adventure to span. If you're not sure or you're flexible about one or both of these, you can write a number range. Try to keep it at four sessions most, since it might be difficult to gehter all needed people and the goal is not to run a new campaign, but lots of showcases.

If you think your game would work for people who don't have prior experience with the system, and/or you're offering pre-generated characters (pregens), check the relevant checkboxes.

Make the Adventure

Write the adventure as you normally would, with any NPCs, locations, maps, or any other element you use when making adventures. If you normally use Kanka to plan adventures, add the entities to the Tales from Everwhere campaign, and give each one a tag with the name of your adventure. Leave the permissions at their default setting for now.

Write a Description

Write a brief description for your adventure. This should be a brief sales pitch, no more than a couple of sentences long. The description should give a bit of background about the adventure, and hint at what kind of gameplay or genre players should expect. If you want to give more insight, please do so within a post (not the main Entry field, because of the overview on the dashboard).

If there are any special considerations for character creation that deviate form the system's rules, include them here. Examples include character level, banned character options, or any optional rules that are in effect.

Additionally, if your adventure contains any sensitive or potentially triggering content, note that here as well.

List the Assets

Make a list of Assets that players can buy with their Tokens of Valor. To estimate the price of a given Asset, remember that each token is roughly equal to 1 session of character advancement. Some examples of what can be assets:

  • In systems like Dungeons & Dragons where level differences between characters can cause problems, Assets would mainly consist of magic items or gold.
  • In systems like World of Darkness where the majority of character advancement is through XP, there might only be a single Asset: Experience points.
  • In systems like Shadowrun where character advancement occurs through both Karma (experience) and cash, there might be two Assets: Karma and cash.

Note that sometimes the price of a given Asset can be higher or lower even within a given system: 100gp is much more significant in a level 3 adventure than in a level 16 adventure!

If you're not sure what Assets you can offer or how to price them, feel free to ask for help over on the Discord channel!

Submission and Player Registration

Once you're done with the adventure's details, contact an admin and give them a link to your adventure. They will post it publicly for players to join.

With your adventure poster made public, players will come to you and ask to sign up to your adventure. As you accept players, write them up on the adventure's poster, so other people can see if your game is already full. If your game is not marked "Requires prior experience", players might come to ask you for help with building their characters or understanding the system - try to help them as much as you can before the game itself. Maybe plan a short introduction to the system at the beginning of your adventure.

Run the Game

Run the game as you normally would. Start the session with a quick introduction so everyone gets to know each other, and get to playing!

After the session, make sure each player (including you) adds a Token of Valor to their Character Passport. To sum up your experience and to let others learn from it, we encourage you to write a journal entry about it, giving view behind your GM screen. What did you plan? Also, if you created entities in the TfE Kanka campaign with your tag, we would appreciate it if you made them public, for others to see. If you have another campaign set in the same world, we would also like it if you could link to it, to give even more inspiration to others.
