The Lord of the Forest’s physical form is deceased. The fate of the divine essence of Herne is unknown and the subject of intense theological debate.

General Description
The Lord of the Forest, or to give his true celestial name Herne, was the eldest of Leannan’s two children with Marduk and was born while she was in the form of a doe, hence his physical form.

Forms
As the Lord of the Forest, Herne appeared in the mortal realm as a gigantic deer with fur of spun silver, glowing green eyes and trees growing where his antlers should have been. His true form was a spindly white figure resembling an Elf, with a crown of thorns growing out of his head, glowing green eyes, and branches growing from just above his ears and along his spine. He had also appeared as a voice whispering through wind in the trees.

Domains
Herne was the god of earth; of agriculture, forestry, and the plants and animals that dwelt upon the surface of the Oerth. He was the protector of woodsmen, hunters, farmers and of the Fae peoples, who he considered to be his children.

Death
Herne was apparently killed as a result of his actions ending the Imperial Wars by using his divine wrath to kill the entire Imperial Troll Empire Government. Being clairvoyant, Herne had been aware that this action would have led to his death and had spent several centuries trying to prevent himself from needing to take this course of action. Once the Fall of Caislean happened he apparently realised that his demise was now inevitable, and after killing the Imperial Government, an action known as the Devastation, allowed The Immortal Governor to kill him. The two of them apparently shared a brief conversation beforehand, but the Governor has refused to ever comment on what was said. Also, it has been said that the Hooded Man also appeared to pay his respects as his body burned away, making sure that his friend did not die alone. His death led to the creation of the Tears of the Forest, the founding of the Church of Hoof and Horn once the reasons for his sacrifice became clear, and Leannan locking herself away to grieve her offspring. This also caused a divide between her and The Nameless One as Leannan blames her brother for causing the death of her son.

Nature of His Death
Herne’s death is also a topic of great debate among theologians and philosophers, as killing a divine is supposed to be impossible for any being who is not a divine themselves. There are many theories as to how this event happened, but nothing with any substantial evidence. Likewise, why his divine essence was also apparently destroyed has never been definitively explained.
